I don't know how anyone else feels about this, but part of the reason why I love the early Incubus (Fungus Amongus/S.C.I.E.N.C.E.), because I believe that it shows Incubus at their truest and purest.

Although the band often says how they are embarassed about their early music because it was so immature, whether they like it or not, that was the true them. Because they hadn't hit it big yet and weren't really known too well, their music wasn't influenced by anyone. They had no expectation to live up to and no record label (more or less) to steer them in a certain direction. Although I don't believe that they let critics, record labels, or anyone tell them how to make their music nowadays, I think it sort of subconciously effects their decisions.

When I listen to the early CD's, I feel like I am hearing the true Incubus in all of their glory.

Thoughts?

I disagree.  I like Science.  Fungus not so much, but Science is a good album.  Brandon even said when they first started to play shows and whatnot that they were influenced by Primus, RHCP and one other band that escapes me right now.  After Science, Make Yourself seemed like it was more of a step toward what they collectively wanted to be as a band and showed that they wanted to kind of stray away from all the funk rock.  They still had traces of it in MY, but when Morning View came out, it was almost gone.  If not all gone.  If you watch the Morning View Sessions DVD, you can clearly see that their music wasn't being influenced by anything but what they as a band wanted it to be.

So I disagree with you.  I feel like with each CD, Incubus grows and becomes more of what they think Incubus should be.

i agree with both of you in different respects. i truly love early incubus but i think if they had not matured and grew up they wouldnt be where they are today, obviously. but i do wish they would go back and write more songs like those on science and make yourself. i enjoy the raw sound of early incubus but also appreciate the polished sound of their newer stuff. you can tell that theyve been true to incubus with every album. thats part of the ever-evolving sonud of incubus.

Oh, I completely agree that as the years pass, they grow into their true selves, but I don't think I explained my thinking very well.
